Sb700 raid driver esxi

I suspected that you were very familiar with installing ESXi but I added it because I thought maybe you can open a ticket with developers of ESXi or post your question in their forum. Sign In Help. I love SmartArrays. I appreciate vendors could, and should, make it a bit clearer what you are buying but calling it fake is still a bit harsh. There must be thousands of productions servers running on entry-level servers that would really benefit from RAID.

Two reasons - one because it is the accepted industry term. And second because it exists for the sole purpose of faking hardware RAID. Perhaps it should be called fake hardware RAID, but as you can see in this case, it is completely fake as there is no RAID whatsoever, software or otherwise. Because vSphere is not trying to be an entry level product and they don't want people running on that hardware. They avoid making it easy to make low end systems because they don't want to be associated with the performance of those systems or the liklihood of mistakes.

It is no different than you would get from AIX, for example. Yes, fake RAID, when it works, is implemented in software but with the addition of a component that no purpose but to deceive the implementer into believing that the RAID is happening in hardware.

Enterprise software RAID never, ever does anything of the sort. Thanks, that all makes sense. But, out of interest, why isn't fake RAID acceptable on a server? Several reasons but the two big ones are performance and fragility. Fake RAID is always slower than other RAID types by its nature of being layered above the OS and it is extremely fragile - as a driver there are tons of ways in which it can break and since the only point of a poorly performing RAID system on a server would be protection, having RAID that breaks easily and hoses your data is a very bad thing.

It is purely at artifact of Windows. But on a server, Windows always has real OS level software RAID that is faster and dramatically more reliable than any fake RAID - and is designed to be used by a business, not designed to trick anyone never work with a vendor trying to trick you - just a good rule in general. On a desktop this is not necessarily true, so fake RAID might Couple reasons but the big one is because the entire purpose of the Windows desktop is to be crippled compared to the server offering - RAID is a big example but you could make it about any number of services.

There is an additional argument, though, that RAID is too complex for the average person and having it would very often lead to people using it as an excuse for not having backups.

I did see one report that the controller runs hot when performing massive data transfers, but I've seen that on just about every controller I've read reviews on. Nothing like another first! After a lot of trolling, I finally found some instructions on building a developer environment to compile my own ESXi drivers. Seems pretty straight forward I'm versed at this level of Linux. But before going through that extreme, I wanted to know if ESXi will even support it. I'm thinking yes because there are custom NIC drivers you can install, right?

It presents itself as a special type of AHCI drive looking like just 1 container. Therefore, the kernel drivers for the software raid needs to be able to read this metadata.
